Today I Earned Many Stars

Last night I had a camp out with my dad in the garden. We started by reading a book by the campfire. Then we had a party in the tent we built. We played games and watched TV on the iPad. I stayed up really late. Around midnight I decided I wanted to come inside and sleep in my bed.

Today I did so much work and I did a really good job. I got tons of stars. First, we read today's library book, "Mouse's First Day of School", by Lauren Thompson. It was about a mouse who hid in a backpack and ended up at school. I had fun filling out my Reading Response Journal sheet today. I drew pictures of the mouse as I summarized what I read. Then, I read my BOB Books.

Next, I completed my visual assessments that I do every other Tuesday. Today I did really good! First I did my numbers 1 - 100. The numbers were all mixed up out of order and I had to say which number was which when they popped up. I got 93 out of 100 numbers correct. That is the best I have done all summer. Then it was time to do my alphabet. I identified all the letters, the sounds they make, and which ones were vowels and which ones were constants correctly. It wasn't easy, because all the letters were out of order just like the numbers. 

I also worked with my flashcards. First I did the animal flashcards and I named 17 out of 36 of the animals correctly. Next I did my sight word flashcards and I identified 11 out of 36 words correctly. That's not too bad considering I just started reading in May. I got dad, fish, down, I, book, dog, be, cat, car, a, and exit correct. Then I did my addition flashcards. Math is so easy I got them all right.

Then, I played my new 50 States game. That's the one that I pick a piece of folded paper out of a pile and try to find the state's matching shape on the map. Today I picked Rhode Island; it was so small I could not find it on the map and needed help. I completed my vision therapy homework and practiced my handwriting with the letter H in upper case and lower case. I also did a Venn Diagram on hockey vs baseball and a worksheet about things that are soft. Finally, I completed two worksheets for math. I added with five and then I added with six.

I checked on the garden too. I think I will be picking corn very soon.

Today I Read Ten Books!

There are only ten days left before the new school year starts and today I worked just as hard as any other day this summer to make sure I am ready. I began my morning by reading my BOB Books. I surprised my dad by reading BOB Book number 6, "Dot and the Dog" all by myself. My dad was surprised because I had only been read the book a few times and no one read it to me at all this past week. I only skipped a few of the words. I did so good reading book number 6 that we moved onto book number seven, "Jig and Mag". I will be reading it by myself by the end of the week. I finished by reading all the other BOB Books I have learned this summer.

Today's library book was "Don't Say That Word!" by Alan Katz. It was the funniest book. It was about a boy name Michael who's mom askes him about his day at school. Whenever he was getting ready to say a bad word like poop, boogies, and fart his mom would yell, "DON'T SAY THAT WORD!" At the end of the book Michael yells, "DON'T SAY THAT WORD!" when is mom says the word bed.

Next I practiced my sight word flash cards. I knew the words, down, go, I, a, cat, exit, dad, dog, and book. I also practiced with new flash cards. One set had pictures of animals and their names. There were animals that I have never seen before on some of the cards. The other set had addition equations; those were very easy.

Then I practiced same and different by completing a Venn Diagram about dogs and cats. I also practiced the similarities and differences in a bag of shapes and their colors. I  identified things that have wheels and some things that do not have wheels. I also practiced my handwriting with the letter M in upper case and lower case. I practiced completing addition equations by adding with 3 and adding with 4. I completed my vision therapy homework using my red and green glasses and my Brock String. I played a new game where I pick a folded up piece of paper out of a pile and on it is a shape of a state. I take the piece of paper over to my map of the United States of America and match the shape with the state on the map.

Finally, I checked on the garden. I picked a basket full of string beans, banana peppers, zucchini, and tomato yesterday. There are so many tomatoes growing I will have to give them away. There are a bunch of bell peppers too, but they still haven't changed color yet. The cobs of corn are growing bigger and bigger. I think we will be eating them soon. 

I like to write at least one big number every day.

August, Exit, House, and More

I asked to start by reading today's library book, "Up, Down, and Around" by Katherine Ayres. It was all about the different directions plants grow. Some grow down in the dirt, some grow above the dirt, and some grow on a twisty vine. I liked how I got to summarize today's story. I drew all the different vegetables in the direction they grew in. Next I read all my BOB Books, except for #6 Dot and the Dog, that one was read to me. 

I worked on another Venn Diagram. Today I did what was the same and what was different between a watermelon and a carrot. When I get back from my mom's I'm going to do a Venn Diagram on a dog and a cat. I did  my sight word flashcards next and I recognized more words today. I even surprised myself. I saw the cards and the words just jumped out of my mouth. Today I recognized dog, exit, house, a, and, I, go, down, book, dad, and cat. Oh, and by the way, I have all ready remembered how to spell the word August!

Next I practiced my handwriting with the letter N. I wrote it in lower case and upper case. At first I thought I wasn't going to be able to write the lower case n, but then I did a really good job. I thought I would be fine with the upper case N, but then I had a really hard time with it. Then I did some addition equations. I am really good at math. I also did my vision therapy homework. Today I worked on my red and green reading with letters and then did my Brock String.

Before I left the house for Speech and OT, I checked on the garden. There was a rotten bell pepper so I threw it in the compost pile. I wonder what the beets and the carrots look like under the ground. Finally, I went to the library to return a whole bag full of books that we have read. When I got there one of the librarians, had even more books waiting for me to check out and some Lego Star Wars DVDs that he had ordered for me. I really like the library, everyone is so nice and they say how much they enjoy seeing me come in to visit.

Bedtime is Canceled

Today I got to decide what school activities I did when again. I like doing that. First I had BOB Book number 6, "Dot and the Dog" read to me. Then I read BOB Books number 1 - 5 to my dad. I have gotten really good at reading my BOB Books. Next I wanted to read today's library book, "Secrets of the Garden" by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld. I like to spell out the key vocabulary words. When I started this website I couldn't read anything more than my own name. It's kind of cool that I can read books and spell words.

I worked on things that are similar and different using another Venn Diagram. Today I compared a wheel and a donut. It was funny. If you put a donut on a bicycle you would crash and if you tried to eat a wheel it would taste bad.

I was getting read to do my sight word flash cards but instead decided to spell some words from memory. I spelled fun, pig, sun, and run. I also got to learn a new word today, August. Today is August 1st, the first day of the new month. Once I spelled those words I practiced my flash cards and I remembered the words I, a, go, down, cat, and dad. 

Next I did some math. I practiced my numbers 1 - 30 and worked on addition equations. Today I practiced adding by 2, like 2+2=4 and 2+10=12. I like adding. Then it was time to practice my handwriting with the letter R in lower case and upper case. I had a difficult time remembering to put the tail on my lower case r, but I got better at it.

Before going to the garden I did my vision therapy homework. I forgot to mention that yesterday. I get to wear these really cool glasses, one side is red and one side is green. I look at pictures or read a book through a piece of plastic that has green and red stripes on it. It is funny and sometimes hard, but I can do it really fast. Then I used this thing called a Brock String. It has a green bead, a yellow bead, and a red bead on it. We move the beads up and down a string and then I look at the bead and see more than one string. It's like magic.

Last night my dad and I built a tent in the garden. Tonight we are going to camp out in the garden. I am so excited. That is why today's entry is titled "Bedtime is Canceled". I got it from a book we read a few days ago by Cece Meng. The kids wrote a note that said Bedtime is Canceled and everyone believed it and all the kids stayed up all night. Anyway, back to the garden. While we were putting up the tent last night we found a giant zucchini that had grown and we didn't even see it. Today there were more banana peppers and string beans to pick. I saw some really big tomatoes, but they aren't ripe yet.
